Prostate biopsy is a procedure to take samples from the prostate to assess if there is prostate cancer or not.

The biopsy is normally recommended by the urologist if the PSA blood test is elevated and if there is suspicion on MRI scan.

The biopsy procedure is done either under local anaesthetic or under mild or deep sedation or even can be done under general anaesthetic.

The biopsy involves taking multiple small samples from the prostate with a specialised needle and also under the guidance of ultrasound to allow the needle to be guided into the prostate.

What to expect when having prostate biopsy?

The procedure takes between 10-20 minutes to be completed.

People who have the biopsy are expected to have mild bleeding in the urine which can last for few days and sometimes more.

Blood in the semen is common also and it can last longer.

Urine infection is rare now-a-days and often people having biopsy are required to take antibiotics.

Most patients can expect to have temporary mild urinary symptoms of increased frequency of urination during the day and night, also increased in urgency and a rush to find the toilet and occasional discomfort on passing urine.

It is rare to stop passing urine completely (urinary retention) requiring a temporary catheter. Some people are at higher risk for retention of urine. Please discuss your particular risk when you attend your appointment.

Some patients may experience temporary weaker erections for few weeks which usually recovers fully.

Also, occasionally some patients may have bruise around the base of the testicles and the penis, this is expected to settle fully.

Most patients will have mild discomfort in the perineum area (area between the testicles and the back passage) and are recommended to avoid strenuous activities including cycling for few days after the biopsy.
